Stimulating Administrative Supplements

What a coincidence. NEI has just announced the availability of administrative supplements for one-time payments of up to $500,000 for infrastructure support on currently funded NEI R01 awards (parent grant must have at least 2 years of active funding). Applications due July 1, 2009.

Watch for similar administrative supplement offers from other ICs looking to spend their stimulus wad (NIH appropriation remains at $10B, with $7.85B available for research funding).

And now, for FY09 only, NHLBI offers limited supplemental support to the NIGMS Medical Scientist Training Program (ie, MD-PhD training grants).

Watch out for more notices and new RFAs. The NYT reports that the negotiated $789 billion stimulus package keeps all $10 billion for the NIH:

For instance, even as negotiators accepted many of the Senate’s reduced spending provisions, they were careful to maintain an additional $6.5 billion for medical research that was inserted at the insistence of Senator Arlen Specter, Republican of Pennsylvania, who is a cancer survivor.

nice. I love the way the bit you quoted made it out like this is some pet porkbarrel project of AS just because he’s a cancer survivor. Keep it classy, NYT!

Well, Specter does have a track record of earmarking extra dollars for NCI when asking for more money for the NIH. Since he specifically indicated $1.2B of his $5.2B supplemental request in 2008 must go to NCI, it will be interesting to see if there are any specified programs in the breakdown of this additional $6.5B. He is a cancer survivor, so, yes, his recognition of the importance of biomedical research and interest in funding of the work that saved him is personal. Better a pet project with broad societal benefits than a bridge to nowhere. – writedit

Send some of it my way, please?

No NCI call-out in the final language of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Just a huge pile of cash being dumped in the office of the director to be spent by Sept 30, 2010.
