Supporting the Right Troops (cancer combat)

The NYT has an excellent series of Op-Ed pieces by Susan Love, Harold Varmus, Shannon Brownlee, Ralph Moss, David Nathan, and Betty Rollin addressing the need to shift tactics in the war on cancer and to support the troops fully. Marisa Acocella Marchetto has an exceptional graphic storyboard contrasting spending on cancer research (& the effects of plummeting investment in biomedical research) with advertisement budgets by tobacco (tobacco spends more just to get teenagers to start smoking than the US government & private industry combined spend on cancer research … please take note of this fact, Dr. Garson at UVa).

This comes alongside a National Academy of Sciences report on the need for an integrated approach to research & development in cancer biomarkers.
