HHMI Joins Open Access Publishing

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute, which funds $600 million in biomedical research annually, will subsidize Dutch science publisher Elsevier to provide free online access to all manuscripts published by HHMI-funded investigators … 6 months after the information appears in its journals. In other words, about the same deal as the NIH would like to see for its funded research (Sen. John Cornyn will reintroduce legislation to make this mandatory -for now still voluntary as previously blogged). However, HHMI is willing to pay $1000-1500 per article for this open access, which will begin with articles published after Sept 1, 2007.
